Question:
Has anyone tried other therapies in addition to meds to treat their panic
attacks/anxiety? I am currently taking ativan and zoloft, still getting
jittery and related side effects (nausea, feeling tired) and yet to see
appreciable results - I still keep waiting for another attack. All my MD does
in response to this is to inc. my meds, and this has me worried. I have read
posts re breathing exercises, psychotherapy, group therapy - anyone have any
results with these?
Answer:
I use "bach Rescue Remedy" for anxiety and it has, so far, kept my anxiety from
escalating into panic. I use breathing exercises when the panic comes "out of
the blue", this helps me to at least get home where I feel safe. These work for
me, I don't know if they will work for you. There are other herbs called, Kava
Kava, Valerian (root), St.Johns Wort etc. But I would not mix them with the
meds you are taking unless your doctor clears it. These herbs are also "meds".
Scientific research has it that two avenues may be very helpful: meds and CBT or
the combination of both. Talk therapy has proven not to do anything for
panic/anxiety. Breathing exercises may and should be included in CBT. Of course
there is a gazillion of herbs, alternative therapies, with doctors and whatnots
out there waiting for your money but their effectivity has never been proven.
